Highland tours PDF Print E-mail
sunnudagur, 26 įgśst 2007
Saltvik Horse Centre has since 1994 in cooperation with Íshestar Travel operated highland tours in the north east part of Iceland.
This year we present 3 kinds of tours.

Northern Exposure - Wonders of Lake Mývatn
The North of Iceland is known for its great natural sights and varied landscape. Our tour leads from Saltvík Farm near Húsavík to the Lake Mývatn area, known for its volcanic features and countless numbers of breeding ducks. An optional whale watching tour concludes the circle of natural highlights on and off shore.
This tour was nominated by The Sunday Times as one of the 10 best trails in the world.

Diamond Circle - Northern Comfort
The Lake Mývatn area is often called the Diamond Circle due to the high density of interesting sights. It witnesses the power of Mother Earth with a display of eerie lava formations, high rising steam clouds, black sand deserts and boiling multi-coloured mud pools. The lake itself is a famous breeding area for ducks, nesting in lush vegetation and raising their ducklings, sheltered by nature and protected by man. This tour is an alternative for those who want to combine the excitement of a highland ride with comfortable accommodation. You also have the advantage of being in a group of maximum 14 guests, which is fewer than we usually, have on our tours.

Íshestar Special -Nine Glacier´s Panorama
Saltvík Horse Centre in cooperation with Íshestar Travel presents for a first time a special tour covering parts of all three traditional highland routes: Sprengisandur, Kjölur and Arnarvatnsheiði. During this tour we will ride across the country with a view over nine glaciers and cross numerous rivers. We start from their farm Saltvík in the North and on the 3rd day we enter the mysterious Sprengisandur Trail. Legends, ghost stories and folksongs describe this highland trail. The huge glaciers of Vatnajökull and Hofsjökull, surrounded by sand and lava fields and mighty glacier fed rivers characterize the remote wilderness. We ride to Hveravellir on the Kjölur Trail, a true oasis in the wilderness with a natural hot pool, before crossing between the north end of Langjökull Glacier and Krákur Mountain. We will ride through Djöflasand (Devil’s sand), past Dauðsmannsgil (Dead man’s canyon) and across the beautiful Arnarvatnsheiði area.

Tailor Made Tours - What would be your dream riding tour ?
Every summer we go tours that are tailor-made in length, tracks and accommodation for groups of friends, companies or families. Some of this groups have been travelling with us year after year following new track every time.
